Unit Preview

Agriculture is science and practice of farming. 

Can you please give an example of farming practice or activity?

 

Task 1

Look at the picture below! Discover what you can find there and read the things you have found aloud in front of the class. You may leave the class and rush to the rubber tree farmland to discover things directly. Observe all things there and jot down on your notepad. You may do it both in group of five and in pair.

Answer these following questions orally.

1.       What tools are usually used by a rubber farmer to tap the rubber tree?

2.       What is the color of the latex when it is still wet (liquid)?

3.      How many time(s) in a day does a rubber farmer usually tap the rubber tree to take      the sap?

4.   What does a rubber farmer usually put into the rubber cup when it’s still wet but heavy rain comes?

5.      Where does a rubber farmer store their harvest when the time comes already?

 Task 3

Now read this explanation text carefully. If you get stuck with the unknown/difficult words, you may then use your dictionary.

 

Procedure Text

Procedure text is a text that is designed to describe how something is achieved through a sequence of actions or steps. It explains how people perform different processes in a sequence of steps. This text uses simple present tense, often imperative sentences. It also uses the temporal conjunction such as first, second, then, next, finally, etc.

The generic structures of procedure text are:

*     Goal/aim (or title)

*     Materials (not required for all procedural texts)

*     Steps (the actions that must be taken)

 

Example:            

How to Plant a Rose Flower (aim/goal)

 

You need (materials)

a) An old stem of rose flower that one of its ends is pointed.

b)  A flower pot

c) A hoe/shovel

d) Some humus soil

e)  Some water

What you should do are: (steps)

a)  Take a shovel/hoe to dig the humus soil and crumble it gently.

b)  Put the humus soil into the flower pot until it’s full.

c)  Take an old stem of rose flower and put it into the pot.

d)  Water it adequately.

e)  Put the pot beneath a shady shelter. Do not put it in a place that is prone to direct sunlight exposure.

Task 4

Now it is your turn to try to make a procedure text. Make a procedure text under the title “How to Tap a Rubber Tree”. Do it in pair.

Task 5

Read aloud your work in front of the class. The rest should assess their friends’ work during their performance.

Task 6

Game: Match the pictures with the sentences bellow.

1. Tap the rubber early in the morning.
2. Put the sap into the rubber cup.
3. Add some rubber condenser liquid.
4. Take the lumps of the rubber out from their cup.
5. Put the lumps of the rubber into boxes that have been filled with latex and let them dry up.
6. When they are already dry, put them on a large open ground for a packaging/wrapping.
7. Rubber is ready to sell.

 

Homework

Make a good procedural text in a good order. The title is free as you like. Write it down on your exercise book.
